Riding for a Cause: Team R-Squared Takes on the Absa Cape Epic
The Absa Cape Epic isn’t just a race. It’s a test of endurance, grit, and sheer determination. It’s eight days of unforgiving terrain, breathtaking scenery, and the ultimate challenge for mountain bikers from around the world. This year, two riders are taking on this legendary race with a purpose far greater than the finish line.
Rupert Esterhuizen (Enslins Centurion) and his riding partner, Rupert Groenewald —collectively known as Team R-Squared—are gearing up for the 2025 Absa Cape Epic, pushing their limits across South Africa’s untamed wilderness. But they’re not just in it for the thrill. They’re turning their passion for mountain biking into a powerful force for good. Through their journey, they are raising funds for CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) and its incredible CANSA Active initiative, helping those affected by cancer stay strong, active, and supported.
A Race Unlike Any Other
The Absa Cape Epic is a stage race like no other. It takes riders through some of the most rugged and unpredictable landscapes Africa has to offer. Scorching heat, unexpected downpours, relentless climbs, and adrenaline-pumping descents—every kilometre is earned through sweat and perseverance. It’s a race where only the toughest make it through, where mechanical failures and mental battles are just as challenging as the steep inclines.
But for Team R-Squared, the struggle on the bike is a symbolic reminder of an even tougher battle—the fight against cancer. The journey of someone facing cancer is filled with its own obstacles: treatments that drain every ounce of energy, emotional and physical exhaustion, and the unrelenting challenge of pushing forward, even when the road ahead feels impossible.
Why CANSA Active?
The reality is that cancer affects all of us in some way. Whether it’s a loved one, a friend, or a colleague, we all know someone who has faced this battle. CANSA Active promotes health and wellness for cancer survivors, encouraging physical activity as a way to stay strong during and after treatment. Every Rand raised by Team R-Squared will go towards supporting CANSA’s vital work—providing education, screenings, care, and support to those who need it most.
How You Can Help
Team R-Squared has set an ambitious goal—to raise R230 000 for CANSA Active. With R102 500 already raised, they’re well on their way, but they need your support to cross the finish line, both in the race and in their fundraising mission.
Every contribution, big or small, brings them closer to making a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families. By supporting their journey, you’re not just backing two riders—you’re standing with everyone who has faced, is facing, or will face the battle against cancer.
Let’s show the world what determination, heart, and the power of a community can do.
